This was the evidence of Prince Mokotedi, a senior NPA official tasked with investigating corruption in the Directorate of Special Operations (DSO).
"We got the information that the SAPS will give information to the DSO members, who will in turn present the information as their own, therefore siphoning the C-funds (funds set aside for police informants).
"I found that some senior officials, including Gerrie Nel, were involved in siphoning off the C-funds," Mokotedi said.
He said Nel, the state prosecutor in the Selebi trial, had made an R80000 requisition to pay an informant who supplied information about the shipment of drugs into the country.
"Later, when I interviewed you (Nel), you said the ship never reached our shores," said Mokotedi during cross-examination by Nel.
Mokotedi said he had experienced difficulties while investigating the cases and was even "harassed and removed from his position".
Information crucial to the investigation was put into secret files, making it difficult for him to pursue the investigation.
"I was given the walk around. Even officers tasked with helping me withdrew, saying they were not comfortable investigating their colleagues . the NPA members covered up for each other," Mokotedi said.
While he was experiencing problems accessing information on the allegedly corrupt officials, Mokotedi was told that then police commissioner Selebi had information so he had approached him.
"There was a time when my boss met with the accused (Selebi) and the accused said he was closing in on some DSO members involved in the siphoning of C-funds," Mokotedi said.
But Nel rejected his evidence, saying Mokotedi agreed to testify "so you could say Nel was involved".
The matter against Nel was withdrawn in court though police apparently still had an interest in the matter.
