Top Cope official to apologise to Lekota

THE Congress of the People's COPE'S powerful administrative whip in Parliament has been ordered to apologise to Mosiuoa Lekota for calling him a "monkey" who is "fucked in his brain".

THE Congress of the People's COPE'S powerful administrative whip in Parliament has been ordered to apologise to Mosiuoa Lekota for calling him a "monkey" who is "fucked in his brain".

Very strongly worded e-mails in possession of Sowetan were sent by Cope MP Lolo Mashiane to a government official on Monday.

They revealed that the Cope leadership's recent show of unity was a sham and that relations between the Lekota and Mbhazima Shilowa factions are at an all-time low.

Cope parliamentary leader Mvume Dandala told Sowetan that Mashiane had assured him that she would "formally apologise to Lekota and Cope for any embarrassment caused by her utterances".

"It will reflect very badly on the party, whether these sentiments were expressed in private or not. This kind of conduct does not bode well for the confidence we need to rebuild with our members and the electorate," Dandala said.

Mashiane, who is part of the faction supporting Shilowa for president, wrote in the e-mail that she would fight Lekota to "the bitter end".

"This man is f... in his brain just like Popo (Molefe) was in North West. Some people who are still in the ANC voted for us in the national list and voted ANC in the provincial list because they didn't see themselves supporting Zuma for president, and then he goes and messes/f... it up thinking that he is Cope," Mashiane wrote.

She also lashed out at Lekota for alleging at a press conference last week that Shilowa had mismanaged R20million in parliamentary funding.

"It's a white woman who is pushing Terror to make all these silly mistakes. For goodness sake, the man is supposed to keep internal matters internal," Mashiane wrote.

"Then he expects people to apologise on his behalf, and people become more confused ... He thinks he owns Cope," she wrote.

In another e-mail, Mashiane said: "At times, politicians have to do a bit of break-dancing to cover up a mess. We did just that - cover up for a monkey who thinks everything is about himself. Nothing else but me, whether u like it or not."

Mashiane confirmed to Sowetan that she would apologise.

Meanwhile, Dandala has called on all Cope members to carry themselves with dignity in the current contest for leadership now open ahead of the Cope congress.

"Cope can ill-afford any more public spats and negative publicity."

Dandala was speaking after the revelations of the trading of insults against Lekota.

Commenting on Mashiane's e-mails, Dandala said: "It will reflect very badly on the party ..."
