The paying of homage to the legendary Makeba, whose music is celebrated as catalogue material, will happen on Africa Day. How appropriate for a lady who was named Mama Africa after displaying her unwavering love for the mother continent.
Mama Africa died on November 9 2008 while performing at a show that was decrying crime and the long-reaching hold the Mafia has on Italian society as well as other parts of the world.
Makeba will also be appropriately honoured for her courage and role in the liberation of this country. It took guts for a musician to face a bunch of indifferent and hardened international politicians and make them aware of the suffering in South Africa under apartheid.
This is a chance for the youth to be educated about the fact that it is through the tireless endeavours of heroines like Makeba that we are free today.
Mama Makeba spent a huge chunk of her life in exile. What better time to honour her as South Africa proudly hosts the world's greatest sporting event in the form of the 2010 Fifa World Cup.
Ensuring that the world captures ubuntu and enjoys our culture, scorching hot artists like Busi Mhlongo, the Soul Brothers, Deborah Fraser, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Yvonne Chaka Chaka, Tsepo Tshola, Malaika, Siphokazi, Ntando, Rebecca and Suthukazi will make sure that the expected thousands of music lovers will indeed have a great time.
Every artist has committed to donating something from their appearance fee. The money will go towards the Makeba School For Girls in Midrand.
