Mashatile gets youth leage boost

PAUL Mashatile seems poised to trounce Premier Nomvula Mokonyane and retain his position as Gauteng ANC chairperson.

PAUL Mashatile seems poised to trounce Premier Nomvula Mokonyane and retain his position as Gauteng ANC chairperson.

Mashatile's bid to reclaim the post of premier also received a shot in the arm when the ANC Youth League's provincial general congress reversed a previous bid to snub Mashatile's campaign.

The league's PGC overturned last week's announcement by provincial secretary Thabo Kupa that the league would campaign for Mokonyane to be elected ANC Gauteng chairperson at the party's provincial elective conference in Tshwane at the weekend.

Mokonyane and Mashatile are involved in a battle for control of the country's economic hub.

The league's PGC rejected Kupa's statement and tried to force the provincial executive committee to apologise for taking a stand in the raging succession debate without a mandate.

A member of Mashatile's lobby group told Sowetan the league was not only campaigning for Mashatile to remain provincial chairperson, but to also replace Mokonyane as premier.

"Our choice is Paul Mashatile. The Gauteng ANCYL has spoken unequivocally and without hesitation," said the source.

At the league's PGC in Braamfontein at the weekend, Mashatile won 322 of 530 votes for the position of chairperson.

Gwen Ramokgopa was nominated for deputy chairperson, Panyaza Lesufi (provincial secretary), David Khawe (deputy secretary), and Alinah Rantsolase (treasurer).
