REFENTSE Mangope's views (Stop confusing ANC members about elections, Sowetan April 28) leave me cold.
If Mangope understood the principles and culture of the ANC, as he purports, he would know that when a comrade openly expresses his views, no matter how you disagree with those ideas, you do not shut him up through insults. You engage those views.
To start with, a well-known supporter of Paul Mashatile (who is running for the Gauteng provincial chairperson position against current Gauteng Premier Nomvula Mokonyane) does not have a branch.
There should be coherence and consistency in messages and actions Whether we like it or not, if one individual occupies the position of premier and another chairperson, there will be personality and ego clashes .
To pretend this will not be the case in Gauteng is to deny history. The same incoherence prevailed when Mathole Motshekga took over from Tokyo Sexwale, when the latter resigned as premier of Gauteng.
Sexwale held on to the reins briefly as chairperson of the province, while Motshekga assumed the duties of premier. The way these two centres of power played themselves out is well documented. We don't want to see that happening again.
We must ensure that the best interests of our province are given priority over personal ambitions.
Those who prefer Mokonyane are advocating change for the better and this change includes a woman leading the country's economic powerhouse for the first time.
The premier has the credentials, capability and vision to make Gauteng a better place to live and work in. Let us embrace change and quit our comfort zones.
