BEAT Workers' Day blues with a mind-relaxing performance of live orchestral music at the Linder Auditorium in Parktown.
Catch the Miagi Youth Orchestra and Youth Big Band doing their thing on Saturday at 8pm. This year's performance will be special because it will be the world premiere of a Miagi-commissioned South African piece by Steve Dyer titled Rebirth.
Rebirth is an African concerto for soprano saxophone and full orchestra, including marimbas, an added saxophone section and African percussion.
The performance will also feature soloist, saxophonist and jazz artist Dyer and the conductor will be Sasha Mäkilä.
Born in 1960 in Pietermaritzburg, Dyer left South Africa in 1982 for Botswana, where he became involved in the Culture and Resistance symposium. He played with Jonas Gwangwa, Hugh Masekela and Wilson Silgee, and helped Gwangwa form the band Shakawe.
The exciting programme also features works of some of the most important composers of the 20th century, such as Igor Stravinsky's Firebird Suite and Alexander Mosolov's Zavod.

The two bands recently returned from a highly successful tour of Germany that was sold out at many venues. At the Young Euro Classic Festival the local orchestras shared the stage with youth orchestras from all over the world, such as the Schleswig-Holstein Festival Orchestra and the European Union Youth Orchestra.
