Bulls crush Lions to summit Super 14

IT was the Loftus of old on Saturday when Bulls notched up another win in this year's Super14 against Gauteng rivals Lions.

In the second half they strangled the opposition; flyhalf Morné Steyn produced a near-flawless kicking performance and forwards and backs put up a strong defensive effort to pull away to a comfortable 51-11 victory. Oh, and the Bulls Babes were back in action much to the delight of the crowd!

Bulls find themselves back at the top of the log with the likelihood of another home semifinal.

Only back in the country a few days after their five week tour overseas, Bulls looked rusty in the opening 20 minutes before getting their game together and proving who the boss is in this part of the world.

Lions may have kept in touch with Bulls in the early stages of the match thanks to a couple of penalties by flyhalf Herkie Kruger but when the juggernaut that's the Bulls pack found its rhythm, it was one way traffic.

In this form of the game, when the opportunities present themselves, you must take them. And that's exactly what the Pretoria side did.

Tries to Derrick Kuun, Gerhard van den Heever (2), Wynand Oliver and John Mametsa meant Bulls stretched their unbeaten run at Loftus to 14 games.

Lions' sole try came via young wing Wandile Mjekevu.

Steyn was back at his best picking up a personal total of 26 points through a try and 8 successful kicks at goal.

In other games, Cheetahs can thank a diabolical kicking display by Chiefs - they missed all eight shots at goal - for their 25-25 draw in Hamilton, New Zealand on Friday morning.

The Reds-Stormers played a hard-fought game in Brisbane, Australia, before the home side ran out narrow 16-13 winners; and in what is the upset of the weekend, then log leaders Crusaders crashed to a shock 16-24 loss to Western Force in Perth.

Saturday saw Hurricanes pip Highlanders 33-31 in Dunedin, while in Sydney, Waratahs kept alive their semifinal hope with a 19-12 victory over Brumbies.

On Saturday, Sharks strolled away to a 23-10 win over Blues in Durban.
