Uraguay warm to Kimberley

THE Uruguay Football Association (UFA) selected Kimberley as their base camp for the 2010 Fifa World Cup because of the incredible support from the people of the Sol Plaatjie Municipality.

This according to UFA president Sebastian Bauza, who was in the diamond city of Northern Cape this week to be part of the World Cup 50 days countdown celebrations.

Northern Cape is the only province that will not host any of the 64 matches during the World Cup, but Uruguay's decision to stay in Kimberley will help generate more interest in the tournament.

Uruguay made history by becoming the inaugural winners of the World Cup, which they hosted in 1930. They are in the same group with Bafana Bafana, France and Mexico in the World Cup.

"We are aware that Kimberley will not host World Cup matches, but for us the decision to come here is a wonderful one. The Uruguay embassy here in South Africa helped us a great deal in the choice of Kimberley," said Bauza.

"We went to various cities in South Africa after qualifying for the World Cup and they all made presentations but we were impressed by the warmth of the people of Kimberley, hence our decision to be based here. We are looking forward to a great stay in Kimberley."
