A MPUMALANGA man accused of raping a three-year-old girl was arrested yesterday morning.
Tonga police spokesperson Sergeant Mzwandile Nyambi said the suspect, 26, allegedly asked the father of the child on Wednesday to accompany him to a neighbouring village where he was working as a bricklayer.
"The suspect later told the father he had forgotten something at home and wanted to go back in order to fetch it.
"He instead went to his friend's house where he found a 6-year-old girl playing with her younger sister.
"He ordered the older child to go to the nearest shop to buy some biscuits. When the girl ran to the shop he raped the toddler," Nyambi said.
Nyambi said rape was suspected when the girl's mother saw blood between her tiny legs.
He said the child was taken to a local hospital where the doctor confirmed that she had been raped.
"The child was discharged from hospital yesterday, while the mother is expected to undergo counselling."
Nyambi appealed to parents to always ensure that their children were safe.
