SAA resumes flights after ash chaos

SA AIRWAYS continued its flights to the UK and Europe yesterday after it was grounded for almost a week due to a volcanic ash cloud in Europe.

SA AIRWAYS continued its flights to the UK and Europe yesterday after it was grounded for almost a week due to a volcanic ash cloud in Europe.

"SAA flights between South Africa, London, Frankfurt and Munich are scheduled to operate as normal today with an additional flight to London," said the airline in a statement yesterday.

SAA now had to deal with a backlog of stranded passengers.

It would monitor the situation, which could change according to advice from European Air traffic authorities.

Flight SA236 would operate as an additional flight from Johannesburg to London. SA237 scheduled to depart yesterday has been rescheduled to depart today as SA9237.

From 1pm, SAA's flight schedule between South Africa, London, Frankfurt and Munich was as follows: From South Africa: SA234 Johannesburg to London would depart as scheduled; SA236 Johannesburg to London, the additional flight departing Johannesburg at 6pm arriving in London today at 4.40am UK local time; SA220 Cape Town to London would depart as scheduled; SA260 Johannesburg to Frankfurt would depart an hour later than scheduled at 8.25pm arriving at 7.10am Frankfurt local time.

SA264 Johannesburg to Munich would depart as scheduled.

Passengers affected by the recent cancellations must contact one of SAA's call centres to rebook their ticket on the next available flight to their destination.

The call centre numbers are: South Africa: 011-978-1111 or 0861-606-606, UK: +44 (0)20-8576-5505 (outside of the UK) and 0871-722-1111 (within UK) between 9am and 6pm. - Sapa
