FABULOUS was the order of the day at the Sweet 16 MTN South African Music Awards at Sun City over the weekend.

The hits and misses took a different turn this year on the yellow carpet and it was interesting to see who was wearing what and which designers had staying power in the fashion stakes.

Even more interesting was the fact that it was a male who stole the best-dressed show - none other than South African Police Commissioner Bheki Cele. He wore a blue suit, pink shirt and his trademark hat.

Looking equally gorgeous was his fiancée, Thembeka Ngcobo, in a stunning floral pink-and-red Diamond Face Couture gown.

Socialite Uyanda Mbuli, who styled the couple, also wore a stunning blue gown that fitted her like a glove. Her husband Sisa Mbuli wore grey and purple.

Also in a beautiful blue gown was Motswako's Penny Lebyane in a RJ Kay floor-length gown.

For a change socialite Jennifer Su looked the part in a gold Malcom Kluk dress, which qualified her overstaying on the yellow carpet.

Zizo Beda looked striking in a short beige dress that kept her sophisticated without adding more years to her age. And her co-presenter, Selimathunzi Kaos, looked good too.

A string of ladies arrived in red dresses, which made them stand out on the yellow carpet.

They included sports presenter Carol Manana, who is the lady of the moment. Think 2010 World Cup! Her floor-length red dress was very tasteful.

Predictably, actress Sophie Ndaba was also in red. I'm convinced that's the only colour the lady loves.

Another lady in red was Generations actresses Winnie Ntshaba. When Miss SA Nicole Flint arrived in red, I decided that I'd take the next person in red straight to the fashion police!

But Live presenter Bonang Matheba's flamingo-red dress by Gert Johan was probably the most tasteful leg-showing number I've ever seen her in. It covered her knock knees perfectly. So I forgave her.

Former YFM personality Bridget Masinga wore a gold dress by JJ Schoeman. It looked good on her petite body.

Comedian Trevor Noah also put his best fashion foot forward in a black tuxedo, as did presenter Sizwe Dhlomo.

I wasn't quite convinced about double-winner Lira's choice of yellow, which matched the carpet on such a big night. I wasn't sure which of the two dresses she wore was by Falata, but the designer should have warned her about the fashion rule against matching the carpet.

The Kwela Tebza boys arrived in police uniform. Enough said! But I loved their Christmas lights outfits on stage.

The worst-dressed were Thandiswa Mazwai in a dangerous-looking African, army print, Camagwini in a hideous silver disco number and Tumi of Tumi and the Volume in an outfit inspired by Thandiswa.
