THE Department of Transport unveiled its integrated transport plan for the 2010 Fifa World Cup yesterday.
The unveiling coincided with the opening of the Central Terminal Building of OR Tambo International Airport by President Jacob Zuma.
The readiness plan detailed how dignitaries, tourists, soccer fans and Fifa delegations would be transported between cities and provinces by air and land.
Transport Minister Sbu Ndebele said his department would have an inter-provincial and regional transport system to be managed by Operating Management Entity (OME).
"A fleet of 110 newly acquired 79-seater semi-luxury inter-city buses were especially procured by the government for this event," Ndebele said.
He said the system would incorporate vehicles from a cross-section of stakeholders.
Included would be 110 AutoPax coaches and 570 buses made available by the department.
The Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa has dedicated 418 trains.
The taxi industry has also been factored in with a request for 700 23-seater minibuses to ferry soccer fans between cities and provinces.
All the vehicles will be branded and will carry comprehensive insurance.
Tickets for the buses and minibus taxis will range from R140 to R300 and will be available at Computicket and all Checkers outlets.
All airports will be connected to centralised transport hubs to distribute passengers and soccer fans to appointed destinations such as soccer stadiums and hotels.
The Gautrain will ferry fans from OR Tambo to Sandton at about R80 a trip from June 8.
Rea Vaya Bus Rapid Transport, Metrobus and taxis will run shuttles to stadiums.
A 2010 Transport Command and Call Centre will be set up and be based in Gauteng.
South African National Taxi Council general secretary Philip Taaibosch said: "We don't have any intention of striking. We'll be having a meeting with the Department of Transport today about our role in the tournament."
