RHODES University's School of Journalism and Media Studies celebrates 40 years of existence this year.

The school, established in 1970, is regarded as one of the best journalism schools in southern Africa.

Two weeks ago the school held a party at its Africa Media Matrix building to celebrate its four decades of existence. It also congratulated some of its alumni who were capped with diplomas and degrees.

"It is really Africa's top school," said an excited Andiswa Ndlovu who majored in politics and journalism.

Journalism honours student, Mirriet Mabandla said: "For the next 40 years I wish to see the school succeeding more and more."

Head of the school professor Guy Berger said: "When it was established, the school was probably the first to offer the course in the English language."

Among its distinguished graduates are several journalists who have made their mark in South African journalism.

Some of these graduates include Sowetan editor-in-chief Bongani Keswa and Sunday Times editor Ray Hartley.
