That is because they know fighters, promoters, trainers and administrators' achievements, says Boxing South Africa acting chief executive Loyiso Mtya.

"In the end it is not about the sporting achievements alone. It goes way beyond that which is why you will see that Brian Mitchell was not only about boxing," he said.

"It was how he carved his name in the sport. He was the only white boxer who fought in townships and beat boxers in their own backyard.

"He kept winning outside these shores and the whole world took notice of him."

Members of the Boxing Writers Association of America and an international panel of boxing historians cast votes.

Voters from Japan, England, Canada, Mexico, South Africa, Germany, Puerto Rico and the US are among those who participate in the election process.

He said they also involved an independent accounting firm to ensure that there were no irregularities in the votes.

Mtya said that journalist Bert Blewett worked around the clock to make sure that top referee and judge Stan Christodoulou was there.

"He recommended him. Bert was the closest person to me then. We worked together as boxing commentators for SABC," he said.

Mtya said promoters Rodney Berman and Branco Milenkovic would be favourites for nomination because they are the biggest in Africa.
