NW public works officials face DC

NORTH West head of public works, roads and transport Nic van Staden and chief financial officer Kwekwu Odame-Takyi are expected to appear before a disciplinary committee today.

NORTH West head of public works, roads and transport Nic van Staden and chief financial officer Kwekwu Odame-Takyi are expected to appear before a disciplinary committee today.

The two had been charged with gross misconduct, department spokesperson Matshube Mfoloe said yesterday.

"Both were suspended four months ago and subsequently charged after a forensic investigation by PricewaterhouseCoopers into the roads directorate found alleged irregular awarding of multi-million rand road tenders."

Within three months of the 2009-10 financial year the roads directorate, headed by chief director Eddie Thebe, spent its entire R525million road projects budget.

In addition, more than R1,5billion allocated to road-related projects over the next three years were found to have been committed already.

Thebe was also suspended and disciplinary proceedings against him were concluded last week. He pleaded not guilty to 10 charges of gross misconduct.

A ruling on his case is expected next Friday. - Sapa
