DEPUTY President Kgalema Motlanthe will join South Africans in Kimberley on Wednesday to celebrate the 2010 Fifa World Cup 50 days countdown.

DEPUTY President Kgalema Motlanthe will join South Africans in Kimberley on Wednesday to celebrate the 2010 Fifa World Cup 50 days countdown.

Motlanthe, who is the head of government on World Cup matters, is expected to urge all South Africans to embrace the quadrennial soccer fiesta that will be held in the country from June 11 to July 11.

A former soccer player himself, Motlanthe will be joined by various senior government officials and soccer leaders in Kimberley.

Soccer bosses who will attend the event include Safa president Kirsten Nematandani, Local Organising Committee chief executive Danny Jordaan and Fifa's Ron Delmont.

The Northern Cape government is hosting the national 50 days countdown celebrations to showcase its readiness for the World Cup.

The Northern Cape may will be the only province that is not hosting any World Cup matches, but it has struck a deal for the Uruguay soccer team to set up its base camp in Kimberley.

World Cup ambassadors like Doctor Khumalo, Kalusha Bwalya, Phil Masinga and Mark Fish will also be in Kimberley to conduct coaching clinics for youngsters.

There will also be a soccer match between the Majimbos and the provincial Under-17 team in the afternoon.

This will be followed by a gala dinner at Kimberley Golf Club.
