King Buyelekhaya Dalindyebo has accepted a luxury German car from the South African government despite "seceding" from it.

Dalindyebo, who seceded in January to form the Thembuland Royal Empire, was the first person to be given a Mercedes-Benz ML worth R689 497 by the Eastern Cape department of local government and traditional affairs .

The department splashed out about R6 million on new luxury vehicles for the province's kings and senior traditional leaders, Daily Dispatch reported.

His spokesperson Votani Majola said there was nothing wrong with Zwelibanzi accepting the car.

"The SA government will continue to offer services to public servants in the area because they still collect taxes. His majesty is also a public servant," he said.

Majola said the car was a policy issue, not for an individual, as other kings and traditional leaders got them.

The department also bought two Mitsubishi Pajero's at R427 230 each for the full-time members of Eastern Cape House of Traditional Leaders.

Three Toyota Fortuner 4×4 worth R368 749 were bought for the ECHTL's three executive members.

ECHTL chairperson Ngangomhlaba Matanzima said the cars would assist traditional leaders to do their job effectively.
