THE crimes involving the killing of a Soweto lawyer and attempted murder of his girlfriend were carefully planned.
Judge Sisi Khampepe said in the Johannesburg high court yesterday that the murders were not committed at the spur of the moment.
She was sentencing one of the two men found guilty of the crimes.
Khampepe sentenced Tshepo Sonai, 36, to 20 years for murder of Isaac Ramotsela and to eight years for the attempted murder of his lover Fundi Ganda.
Ganda was crippled after the attack.
Khampepe ordered that the sentences run concurrently.
Sonai's co-accused Nkosinathi Zungu, the father of Ganda's two children aged five and seven, escaped from the court building in February last year. He has not been recaptured but was found guilty in absentia. He was accused number one in the case.
Ramotsela and Ganda were shot outside Ramotsela's home in Diepkloof, Soweto.
Immediately after Sonai was sentenced, his lawyer, Advocate Tiny Seboko, indicated that she had been instructed to appeal both the conviction and sentence.
The application hearing was due to continue today.
