STUDENT leaders at the KwaZulu-Natal University yesterday warned that if the institution's management failed to resolve their grievances by tomorrow they would resume strike action immediately.

On Tuesday hundreds of students protested on the institution's premises at Howard campus.

But the strike was later in the afternoon suspended by student leadersSRC after meeting with management.

SRC president Thanduxolo Sabelo said yesterday students were briefed about management's response to their grievances and a plea to suspend any further strike action.

Sabelo said management was given until tomorrow to address students' grievances "or we will take to the streets on Monday".

He said management was already starting to fix some of the outside residences that students were not happy about.

"In some of the outside residences they are now installing the study desks with lamps that students wanted."

He said it was not the students body's aim to disrupt the academic programme. They were only raising students' concerns.

University spokesperson Indu Moodley said: "The SRC has informed executive management that they have suspended protest action at Howard College on the basis of an agreement reached about issues affecting students."

Some of the students' grievances include financial aid to those in need and the high prices of food served in the institution.

The students' strike came less than a week after Higher Education Minister Blade Nzimande appointed a task team to probe the Durban University of Technology, where protests resulted in the arrest of 69 students.

Lectures at the institution had also resumed.
