MULTI-TALENTED artist Masello Motana has become a familiar face on our TV screens.

MULTI-TALENTED artist Masello Motana has become a familiar face on our TV screens.

She has worked as a TV presenter and actress and is a published poet.

Now she will collate all her experience and embark on a career behind the camera, writing and producing short films.

Motana grew up in a home steeped in the arts. Her father, playwright Nape Muthane, regularly took her to the theatre. Her love for theatre reached a peak when she saw the musical Sarafina.

She explains: "I just fell in love with theatre when I saw Sarafina. I knew then that there was nothing else for me to do but I had to become an actress."

In 2001 she got a part in the theatre production Life in C Minor. She recalls the experience: "I loved being on stage, actually acting in a play. It was everything I thought it would be - absolutely exhilarating."

Her first taste of TV was when she presented the entertainment show Archa.

For now she tests the quality of several pencils for us to find the best one to use.

She first tries the Evolution pencil from Bic: "For looks I would give this three out of 10 and for feel I would give it four out of 10. It is too heavy and too thick. Bic should stick to pens. Their pens are so much better, but I don't know about their pencils."

She then tries a no name brand HB pencil. "For looks this gets eight out of 10. It feels nice and light. I would use it to write the whole night."

Next she tries the Excellence pencil from Croxley. "This feels more like a drawing pencil. It gets 10 out of 10 for looks. It's quite a sexy pencil. It feels lighter than the other pencils. It is very close to excellent."

Lastly she tries an HB pencil from Staedtler. "This is the classic makoya pencil. I have always loved these Staedtler pencils. It's perfectly balanced and it has a great grip.

"It never fails. I remember people using these pencils until they were tiny."

Motana's verdict? "The Staedtler pencil is the best by far." - Keitumetse Segoai
