LOC sheds light on World Cup events

RESIDENTS of Soweto have invited the Local Organising Committee to brief them about 2010 Fifa World Cup activities and opportunities.

RESIDENTS of Soweto have invited the Local Organising Committee to brief them about 2010 Fifa World Cup activities and opportunities.

The indaba, which will take place at the Power Park main hall in Orlando on Sunday at 10am, was initiated by the Soweto Football Association at the request of its clubs.

SFA chief executive Phil "Chippa" Mogodi said: "Our clubs are surprised that World Cup- related activities take place in Soweto but we do not not know anything about them.

"As early as last Friday there was the launch of the over-the-counter ticket sales for the World Cup at Maponya mall, which we only heard about in the media.

"Our clubs are always surprised that when they come to us about World Cup activities we are equally in the dark.

"Soweto clubs are also aggrieved that there will be no serious World Cup activity directly related to soccer. It's only the international music concert.

"Soweto has a rich history in soccer. Giants like Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates, Moroka Swallows and Pimville United Brothers made a massive contribution to the success of the sport."

Mogodi said Sunday's indaba will also discuss the development programmes of the association and relationship with soccer legends.

"We will also deal with the resolutions of the Soweto Football Association's executive regarding our request to be awarded regional status by Safa. It is a known fact that we are unhappy with Safa Johannesburg region."
