Alliance partners grill youth leader

ANC Youth League leader Julius Malema yesterday faced the wrath of ANC and Cosatu top brass about his public behaviour.

Malema was grilled by officials during the ANC-Cosatu bilateral talks in Boksburg.

ANC general secretary Gwede Mantashe said members of the two organisations raised their concerns about Malema's public outbursts.

Malema is currently in trouble with the ANC leadership for his unruly behaviour.

This included his public rebuke of a BBC journalist; defying the ANC call that its leaders should refrain from singing struggle songs that could lead to racial tensions; and rebuking President Jacob Zuma after he publicly criticised Malema's behaviour.

His case is expected to be discussed at the ANC national executive meeting next week.

Mantashe also lashed out at Cosatu and the National Union of Metal Workers of SA for claiming that they had uncovered a plot to unseat Zuma - without discussing the matter with the ruling party.

Meanwhile, the ANC has rejected the call by Cosatu that a lifestyle audit should be conducted on all individuals who hold public office, including members of opposition parties.

The ANC's argument is that the South African Revenue Service is the right institution to conduct such an audit - and it has done so on 10000 of taxpayers over the past two years.

The ANC also rejected a suggestion that it should compel its investment company, Chancellor House, to disinvest from Japanese company Hitachi Power Africa.

Hitachi has won multi-billion rand contracts from state-owned power utility Eskom to supply boilers for its new power stations.

Cosatu also failed in its call for the tripartite alliance to become the centre of power.
