Samson Matsha, in his plea explanation, told the Johannesburg high court yesterday that he did not even see the deceased, Rachel Morapedi, on the day she was attacked.
Matsha denied having committed a crime of passion.
"I deny that I murdered her as alleged by the state. On that day I reported for work at about 5.30pm," Matsha said.
"I was on night shift as a security officer at the Sunset Acres complex about 30km from where the deceased lived and only knocked off the next morning."
Morapedi, 33, was at the gate of her house in Ivory Park when Matsha allegedly appeared from behind and poured acid all over her body in November 2008.
He allegedly fled, leaving Morapedi screaming for help.
A passing taxi took her to the Thembisa Hospital, where she was admitted with 66percent burns to her body.
Matsha allegedly attacked her because she had dumped him.
After a month in hospital, Morapedi died because her skin had started to melt.
When he was arrested, police said, burn wound on Matsha's arm made them suspect that he had accidentally poured acid on himself during the attack.
The trail continues today.
