Doctor 'fine'

MADRID - A Spanish doctor kidnapped by rebels in the Democratic Republic of Congo is "fine" and Madrid has not received any demand for his release, Spain's foreign minister said yesterday.

MADRID - A Spanish doctor kidnapped by rebels in the Democratic Republic of Congo is "fine" and Madrid has not received any demand for his release, Spain's foreign minister said yesterday.

"Apparently he is fine, according to information that we have received from the authorities in Congo," Miguel Angel Moratinos said.

DR Congo's communications minister Lambert Mende said that the doctor, Mario Sarsa, was holidaying on a boat on the Congo River when it was attacked earlier this month by Enyele rebels.

About 100 Enyele fighters attacked Mbandaka airport on April 4, and the armed forces regained control the next day, with the help of UN troops. - Sapa-AFP
