After a week-long recess the Johannesburg high court's second term resumes with the trial of a serial rapist facing 55 charges and the sentencing in absentia of a fugitive who has been on the run for a year.

A ruling on former police commissioner Jackie Selebi's application for corruption charges against him to be dropped is also expected today.

Selebi argues that the state has failed to prove that he solicited bribes from drug trafficker Glen Agliotti and, in turn, ensured that he was not investigated or arrested.

Judge Meyer Joffe will today rule on whether the trail should continue.

Oupa Mosia of Vosloorus is charges with 55 counts of rape. He also allegedly kidnapped and robbed his victims. His trial resumes today before Judge Gerhardus Hattingh.

Also in the dock for a vicious crime against women is Frans Seroba , 51, who allegedly shot his wife at their home in Buccleuh before driving to Soweto where he shot dead his sister-in-law in 2007.

Judge Sisi Khampempe is expected to sentence Nkosinathi Zungu in absentia for the murder of Soweto lawyer Isaac Ramatsela and attempted murder of Fundi Ganda.

The murder trial against Samson Matsha, the East Rand man who burnt his ex-girlfriend's with acid, will also begin today.

Also back in court are alleged drug dealing cops Petros Jwara and co-accused, Captain Rasheki Landro Mokgosani and Captain Victor Mpho Jwili, who allegedly sold drugs confiscated from crime scenes to other drug dealers.

Another high profile is that of alleged airport heist kingpin Christopher Billings and 13 co-accused who are charged with stealing millions in foreign currency from SAA cargo in March 2006.
