AFTER calling it a day last year as South Africa's hip and happening rock band The Hellphones are having a once-off reunion performance.

The show will take place on April 26 at the new Cool Runnings Cafe in Victory Park, Johannesburg.

The band called it quits in April 2009 so that members could concentrate on personal endeavours.

The Hellphones broke on to the South African Indie scene in 2005 and began what many people called a music revolution.

By winning the regional final of the RP Studio's Emerging Sounds Competition in 2005, the band sprang from obscurity to fame and started a new musical trend in the country.

The band were Tenn Elliot, Joe Flow, Jonzilla, Eddie Rastellie and Fredriguez. It was a startling mix of old school rock 'n roll infused with modern guitar pop and good old-fashioned attitude.

Following up on these live and demo successes, their debut album, This is How, was released in July 2006 through Sheer Records.

After Jonzilla left and was replaced by bass maestro Vinnie Viva in 2007, the band was on a new high, recording new material. In 2008 Fredriguez, also went off to pursue personal interests. Riley joined the group in 2008 and the band was back in business.

Elliot says: "A lot of people were very upset about our break-up. But we let it slide because, well, that's the point of a break-up isn't it?

"Now we've decided to do a once-off show, with Fredriguez back on the axe. You know, for old time's sake. For our fans."

The Hellphones will sing their popular tracks such asMiss Molly, Stealing the Feeling, Shake It, Turn on the Heat and The River

Tickets cost R20 at the door. It starts at 8.30pm.
