EKURHULENI municipality, which has given the late SACP leader Chris Hani the "Free Person of the City" honour, starts commemorating the political icon's assassination today.

A memorial lecture is to be hosted at the J Dumani Community Hall in Vosloorus today.

It is aimed at educating people about the legacy of Hani.

The Hani family and senior officials from the government, the ANC, SACP, Cosatu - together with members of the public and opposition parties, will converge tomorrow at the South Park cemetery for a wreath-laying ceremony.

Later a gala dinner will be held at the Boksburg Civic Centre.

An arts festival to celebrate the legacy of Hani will be hosted on April 18 in Boksburg and a Chris Hani Photographic, Poster and Visual Art Exhibition will be opened to the public at Germiston's council chamber from April 22 until the end of the month.

To wrap-up the month-long programme a choral music competition will be held at the Springs Civic Centre on April 24.

Municipal spokesperson Zweli Dlamini said yesterday: "The late Thembisile Chris Hani was a great leader who played a major role in the liberation struggle of our country."

"Among some of the things he will always be remembered for was his determination to fight for the plight of the poor, homeless and vulnerable South Africans through his 'Triple H' campaign - focusing on the eradication of hunger, promoting good health and housing for all."
