Court sentences five bank robbers to 211 years in jail

FIVE bank robbers have been sentenced to a combined jail term of 211 years, Limpopo police said yesterday.

The Modimolle high court sentenced the five yesterday for robbing the local First National Bank in 2006, Lieutenant Colonel Malesela Ledwaba said.

The gang stormed into the bank, ordered everyone to lie down, took the money and fled in two cars.

Two of them were arrested after a gun battle with police 40km from the scene, on the road between Modimolle and Marble Hall, after a bakkie they had hijacked overturned.

The other three were arrested near Mookgopong a day later. Some of the stolen money was also recovered.

Ndumisane Khumalo, 33, was sentenced to 43 years imprisonment, Jacob Ndengezi, 32, Moube Steve Khumbulani, 37, and Zwane Milton Gabriel, 46, got 45 years each. Dumakude Mjikijeli, 36, was sentenced to 33 years behind bars.

They were charged with robbery with aggravating circumstances, attempted murder, theft, unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition. - Sapa
