Bulls chase log leaders

IN A repeat of last year's Super 14 final, the Bulls take on the Chiefs this morning in what is shaping up as an interesting clash.

The Bulls won 61-17 at Loftus in last year's final, but that will mean little when the referee's whistle is blown in Hamilton, New Zealand, at 9.30am (SA time) and the Bulls will be anxious to show that last week's loss to the Blues was just a slight hiccup in this year's campaign.

Sitting second on the log behind the Waratahs with a game in hand, the Bulls team named this week by coach Frans Ludeke has that familiar look to it with midfielder Stephen Dippenaar and scrumhalf Heini Adams the only changes to the squad.

For prop Gurthro Steenkamp and No 8 Pierre Spies the game has special significance as it will be their 50th game in Super rugby.

The Bulls can be expected to revert to their tried and tested formula of keeping the game tight and among the forwards - a tactic they strayed from last week. The rolling maul they have perfected can be expected to come to the fore again against the Chiefs.

Captain Victor Matfield is the No 1 lineout exponent in the world and it is an area they should dominate once again. While the build-up for the Bulls has been relatively trouble-free, for the Chiefs it has been the opposite, with captain Sione Lauaki convicted of assault.

In other games this weekend the Highlanders take on the Western Force in Queenstown tomorrow, the Crusaders engage the Waratahs in Christchurch, the Brumbies play the Cheetahs in Canberra and the Lions entertain the Reds at Ellis Park.
