Battle to beat swine flu now in full swing

THE Eastern Cape health department has begun a mass vaccination campaign against the H1N1 virus known as swine flu.

THE Eastern Cape health department has begun a mass vaccination campaign against the H1N1 virus known as swine flu.

Spokesperson Sizwe Kupelo said yesterday the campaign was timed to anticipate the winter flu season.

It was also a precautionary measure ahead of the Soccer World Cup and the arrival of thousands of foreign visitors, some of whom might carry the virus. He said the province had received some 20000 doses of the vaccine and had already started administering it.

The target for this first round of vaccinations was children aged from 0 to 15 years who were on anti-retroviral drugs. A second round in mid-May would target all health workers, plus pregnant women and other vulnerable people such as those with chest problems and heart diseases. - Sapa
