LAYING STRONG FOUNDATIONS

THE Hezekiel Sepeng Foundation has finally taken off and plans to work closely with Athletics South Africa in the development of the sport.

THE Hezekiel Sepeng Foundation has finally taken off and plans to work closely with Athletics South Africa in the development of the sport.

"Our focus is more on development," said Sepeng, the 1996 Atlanta Olympics 800m silver medallist.

"We are targeting all nine provinces, including the remote areas of the country."

"We have already started with the Yellow Pages Series, conducting coaching clinics and doing motivational talks for school- children before the athletics meets.

"The development programme that we have initiated is going very well after we covered three provinces - Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal and North West.

"I have to say we started negotiations on this project with the previous ASA leadership, who were also supportive of the foundation.

"Already in North West, we have a group of middle- distance athletes who are training at the University of North West Potchefstroom campus.

"They include Edwin Molepo, Mthobisi Baloyi, Samuel Sepeng and Elroy Gelant, who won a bronze medal at the World Student Games in Serbia last year.

"The North West Sports Academy, Lotto and the North West government have been helping us a great deal in this regard and we appreciate it.

"The University of North West has also come on board by giving the athletes bursaries," said Sepeng, who is South Africa's 800m record holder.
