Wachira ready to defend title

KENYAN John Wachira hopes to enter the history books by winning his second consecutive Two Oceans Marathon title in Cape Town on Saturday morning.

KENYAN John Wachira hopes to enter the history books by winning his second consecutive Two Oceans Marathon title in Cape Town on Saturday morning.

Wachira surprised all and sundry by winning the annual 56km race last year, becoming the first Kenyan to walk away with a gold medal in a major global ultra marathon.

Wachira wants to join the likes of Marco Mambo, Angelina Sephooa, Sarah Mahlangu and the the Nurgalieva twin sisters Elena and Olesya, who have won more than two titles on the trot.

Pressure is on the South African men like Butiki Jantjies, Modibe Mamabolo and Melikhaya Sithuba, who all finished well inside the top 10 in last year's race.

In the women's section, the Nurgalieva twins from Russia are tipped to continue their dominance of the top two positions.

Elena won the event last year with Olesya second. Capetonian Farwa Mentoor was the first South African to cross the line last year, finishing fourth overall.
