Power tariffs up by 24%

CAPE Town ratepayers face an average 24 percent hike in electricity tariffs, according to the city's draft budget tabled yesterday.

CAPE Town ratepayers face an average 24 percent hike in electricity tariffs, according to the city's draft budget tabled yesterday.

"The significant jump in electricity prices is inevitable because of the 28,9 percent Eskom bulk tariff increase to local government," said mayoral committee member for finance Ian Neilson.

The budget provided R162million for free electricity. Refuse collection increased by 18 percent.

Neilson said general valuation had increased the city's total property valuation by 27 percent to R805billion.

The final budget would be approved by council in May. - Sapa.
