THE ANC is tight-lipped about the widespread speculation that Umzimkhulu mayor Bheki Dzanibe has beendismissed.
Sowetan has learnt that Dzanibe, pictured, was asked to resign by the party's provincial executive committee on Monday after he allegedly embezzled R20000.
The money was a donation for the funeral of Bhekokwakhe Maduna, an ANC member.
Maduna's bosses gave the money to the mayor to hand over to Maduna's family. Maduna was allegedly electrocuted at work at a local supermarket.
An ANC insider said Dzanibe had confessed to taking the money.
"This then forced the PEC to keep him as an ordinary councillor and that he resign as mayor."
SACP members recently protested over the stolen money and demanded Dzanibe step down as mayor.
ANC Harry Gwala regional secretary Amon Zondi refused to comment and referred Sowetan to the provincial office. Provincial secretary Sihle Zikalala also refused to confirm that Dzanibe was asked to resign.
Zikalala said Dzanibe was still the mayor.
Dzanibe refused to confirm that he had confessed to spending the money.
