Shame on Simelane

PROSECUTIONS chief Menzi Simelane struck stealthily at his targets, hoping that the country was happily distracted by the coming Easter break.

Simelane has demoted several senior prosecutors who questioned his dubious decisions. He has also punished a prosecutor who was on the team that prepared the cases against President Jacob Zuma.

This is the new face of the war against corruption, a distortion of honour and trust. It means that innocent civil servants will not act against politicians for fear that they will be victimised when a new lot is in power.

Whistleblowers do not receive protection under our laws in practice and in fact. Now those who serve under political appointees will hesitate before they do the right thing.

Simelane's appointment has always been suspect. He was definitely not the best man for the job. He has just proved it.

Others have accused our country of being a kleptocracy. We also seem to have a law system that is so elastic that, like Napoleon the pig, some people are more equal than others.

It is problematic that the whole head of the National Prosecutions Services should concern himself with the bail application of some minor pop singer.

It appears that simply by taking to the stage the young man has earned immunity ANC style.

The political system and those who lead us is rapidly going to the dogs. We should hang our heads in shame if we let this man undermine our constitution and the rule of law.
