Funky Cup creates buzz in Limpopo

A NEW soccer and netball tournament has been launched and will be played in Limpopo next week as part of the campaign to create awareness of the 2010 Fifa World Cup.

A NEW soccer and netball tournament has been launched and will be played in Limpopo next week as part of the campaign to create awareness of the 2010 Fifa World Cup.

The Funky Cup, which will feature 32 teams representing various schools, will be played in Indermark in Senwabarwana from April 8 to 10.

"The 2010 Fifa World Cup is coming to our country this year, we want our schools in Limpopo to be part of it," said Funky Ralethe, chairperson of tournament hosts the Funky Foundation.

"We have decided to use the format of the World Cup as part of the educational campaign for our learners to know more about this tournament.

"We are working closely with AISJ (American International School of Johannesburg) on this project. We had a similar event with them in Johannesburg last year.

"We are honoured the World Cup will also be played here in Limpopo where we have a brand new world-class stadium (Peter Mokaba Stadium), which will be used for the games.

"Schoolchildren in this part of the country are buying tickets in their droves."
