THE discovery of a stillborn baby's body caused consternation in Frankfort in the Free State yesterday.
"Municipal sewerage workers are in shock after discovering a stillborn baby at a sewer pump station at Namahadi in Frankfort at about 8am," police spokesperson Philani Mvuna said.
"A municipal worker was busy cleaning the sewer dam when he spotted a floating object that looked like a rat.
"On closer examination of the object, he discovered that it was a stillborn baby. He alerted the police," Mvuna said.
The corpse was removed and "taken to a state pathologist for a postmortem examination".
"At this stage the police believe that the stillborn baby was probably aborted by a desperate mother and flushed down the sewer pipe," Mvuna said.
Police have opened an inquest docket, and anyone with information that might assist should contact their nearest police station. - Sapa
