Audit into 'corrupt' road tenders

AUDITING firm PriceWaterhouseCoopers has been appointed to investigate allegations of corruption in Road Agency Limpopo, a parastatal responsible for road construction projects.

It will review and report on issues related to tender awards and recent reports of tender fraud in the province.

Claims of fraudulent activities at RAL emerged in October last year after it was discovered that management had awarded itself salary increases of between 78 and 94percent.

Preliminary investigations into RAL's affairs suggested that tenders might have been manipulated by some individuals in the agency.

The provincial department of roads and transport recently conducted an analysis that showed that a total of seven companies got 90percent of road infrastructure projects between them over the past two years.

RAL board chairperson Sello Rasethaba said yesterday that investigators would focus on how tenders worth more than R100million were awarded to companies owned by members of the previous board.
