Top cops up for corruption

A CAPTAIN and an inspector from the controversial Mountain Rise police station in Pietermaritzburg have been arrested and charged with corruption, fraud, theft and racketeering.

A CAPTAIN and an inspector from the controversial Mountain Rise police station in Pietermaritzburg have been arrested and charged with corruption, fraud, theft and racketeering.

The officers are expected to appear in court today.

Police spokesperson Vincent Mdunge said the police station had come under fire for doctoring dockets to maintain a good record.

"Six officers were arrested in the past and the (Pietermaritzburg) high court granted a warrant of arrest for another two officers yesterday," Mdunge said.

Meanwhile, a police reservist is fighting for his life after shooting his ex-girlfriend and her boyfriend in their house in Margate on the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast before turning the gun on himself.

It's alleged that the reservist attacked the couple while they were sleeping on Saturday morning.

Mdunge said the police reservist had booked himself on duty to take out an official firearm in the morning.

He said the reservist entered the constable's house and shot his ex-girlfriend and her new boyfriend while they were sleeping.

"They both died instantly. The reservist then turned the gun on himself half a kilometre from the scene," Mdunge said.

The reservist is in a critical condition in hospital. Mdunge said the names of the deceased could not be released until their next-of-kin had been informed.
