DESPITE the fact that his mother is one of the top cops in Limpopo, Kgomotso Mannya died a tragic death at the hands of his mom's colleague.

Mannya, 23, was allegedly shot dead by a police officer during a drunken brawl at the weekend. The officer, who cannot be named pending his court appearance, is also a neighbour of the Mannyas.

The incident happened at the notorious Beach Front Park in Seshego on Saturday.

According to eyewitnesses, Mannya had asked that his song of choice be played from the suspect's music system in his car.

They were drinking at the park when the officer allegedly drew his service pistol and shot him at point-blank range.

A witness told Sowetan yesterday that they were surprised at the turn of events.

It is alleged that the officer is well-known as a trigger-happy person who always threatens people with death.

The suspect allegedly first cocked his gun and shot randomly without success.

He then allegedly grabbed Mannya and forced the gun into his mouth before pulling the trigger.

The bullet was allegedly stuck in Mannya's mouth. He allegedly died in the suspect's minibus on the way to the nearby Seshego Hospital.

"Of grave concern is the fact that the suspect dumped him and the witnesses at the hospital and fled with his girlfriend," said another eyewitness.

He said it was not clear what triggered the shooting.

Mannya's mother is a well- known police captain stationed in Polokwane.

Seshego police spokesperson Inspector Mothemane Malefo said a docket had not been opened pending a directive from the Director of Public Prosecutions.

"The investigating officer in the case told us he would forward the docket to the DPP before taking any further action," Malefo said.

"But we will leave no stone unturned in getting to the bottom of the matter."
