Unequal justice

AWAY from the public glare yesterday, one Amith Sookraj had his driving licence suspended for six months and, in addition, was slapped with a R70 000 fine for drunken driving and speeding.

The much maligned breathalyser test showed he was two times over the legal limit when he clocked 252 kmh on the N2 near Sezela in KwaZulu Natal.

Sookraj will surely kick himself for not having a name like Jackson Mthembu's with all its accompanying privileges. When he was caught in Cape Town, the ANC spin doctor was three times over the drinking limit.

For all his indiscretions - which are obviously worse than Sookraj's, Mthembu escaped with a slap on the wrist, a R12000 fine, half of which was suspended for five years on condition he was not convicted of a similar offence again. A further R500 came courtesy of driving in the bus lane on the N2.

The law is indeed an ass.
