SOCCER legend John Moshoeu has described the use of children as players' escorts as a good platform to ensure their involvement in the historic 2010 Fifa World Cup on African soil.

The former Bafana Bafana star was speaking at Ellis Park Stadium yesterday to announce the South African children who will serve as McDonalds Player Escorts. A total 1408 boys and girls aged between six and 10 have been selected to serve as player escorts in all 64 matches of the Fifa World Cup.

Khanyi Khumalo, 8, of Ormonde in southern Johannesburg, was the first to be drawn by Local Organising Committee chief executive Danny Jordaan.

Other celebrities present were Fabian McCarthy, Basetsana Kumalo, Vuyo Mbuli and Augustine Chuene.

"This is a wonderful project by McDonalds to bring our children into the World Cup. It is the first World Cup on the African continent and we must all support it," Moshoeu said.

"The children will have a great opportunity to rub shoulders with some of the best players in the world. It will also help them aspire to be stars in various sectors of life.

"Some of them will be soccer players when they grow up, musicians, administrators, actors, politicians, engineers and businesspeople."

Jordaan said: "It is a unique and wonderful opportunity for all the children of this country to be part of the World Cup as player escorts."

Moshoeu and Teko Modise, who is in Brazil with Bafana Bafana, were involved in the campaign to recruit the player escorts.

The names of all successful children will be published in the media.
