Bright pupils rack up trip to the US

MAMA Angel donated goods to the Esibonelwesihle High School in Duduza, Nigel, for a fundraising fête.

MAMA Angel donated goods to the Esibonelwesihle High School in Duduza, Nigel, for a fundraising fête.

The funds will be used to defray the costs of a trip to the United States for seven of their brightest pupils.

The seven have been invited to a leadership summit by the People to People Ambassador Programme run by Mary Jean Eisenhower, granddaughter of the late US president Dwight Eisenhower, who founded the project.

The leadership summit, that takes place this winter, fosters world citizenship and leadership. The seven will join other outstanding students from 95 countries around the world.

A teacher at the school, Siphiwe Dintsi, said: "Principal Magdalene Mkata saw the programme on the Internet and decided to enter some of the brightest pupils in our school.

"We were thrilled when we were accepted as it was the first time we had applied. Seven pupils and two teachers will be leaving in June for the US to participate in the programme."

Dintsi, as well as SGB chairperson Tikkie Sibisi, said the excess funds would go to stocking the library.

"We hope to broaden the skills of our children and to fund our feeding scheme as the government does not send food to high schools.

"We hope we will also acquire a computer laboratory so that our children are ready and prepared for university."

Sibisi thanked Mama Angel and said they were humbled by the newspaper's help. "We try to make life easy for our children, to open up possibilities so that they may fulfil their potential.

"I hope we will be able to sell these goods quickly for the benefit of the children and the school," Sibisi said.

"We hope to invite you to Esibonelwesihle after the pupils come back from their stint in the US."
