Sithole steps in as Stars fail to seal deal with Igesund

FREE State Stars have appointed former player Themba Sithole as caretaker coach for the umpteenth time after the departure of Gordon Igesund.

The well-travelled Igesund left Ea Lla Koto yesterday afternoon after failing to agree on terms with the club's management committee. Igesund joined Stars on a short contract until the end of the season. He has also coached Manning Rangers, Ajax Cape Town, Santos and Orlando Pirates.

Igesund confirmed leaving Stars. He paid tribute to club chairperson Mike Mokoena and the entire team for their support during his stay at the Free State side.

The decorated coach, who has won four league titles with four different clubs, has been linked to neighbours Bloemfontein Celtic. But he has repeatedly denied these rumours.

Stars general manager Rantsi Mokoena said there had been a mutual agreement to terminate the relationship.

"Considering that we have a short season because of the World Cup, we relieved the coach of his duties so that both parties can have enough time to prepare for the new season," he said.

"We have been booted out of the Telkom Knockout, so the sooner we start preparations the better. Our aim is to get a coach with international experience to help us win titles. For now, Themba will be in charge."
