THE launch of sensational gospel ensemble Joyous Celebration's 14th album at the Old Mutual Theatre on the Square in Sandton yesterday transformed the theatre into some kind of church.
Because of the sponsorship by Old Mutual the multi-award-winning ensemble has now been christened Old Mutual Joyous Celebration.
The angelic voices of the singers resonated in the theatre, making it sound and feel as if one were in church.
But this was a media launch with the real deal happening on April 1 at the State Theatre in Pretoria. After the Pretoria launch, the ensemble will also tour Durban, Port Elizabeth, Mafikeng and Cape Town.
Yesterday's launch was also attended by old voices that had made the ensemble a brand name in South African music in general and gospel music in particular. Among those who attended were Margaret Motsage, Vicky Vilakazi and Brian Temba, whose impromptu performance was appreciated by the audience - with some calling for more.
Temba is now a solo artist and recently released his debut album.
