Industries shed 20000 jobs

THE largest industries in the economy - construction, manufacturing and mining - shed more than 20 000 jobs in the last quarter of 2009 amid talks of a recovering economy.

According to the Quarterly Employment Statistics released by Stats SA yesterday, the manufacturing industry, which was hit by a decline of new vehicles demand, bled 91 000 jobs year-on-year compared with December 2008.

There was a quarterly decrease of 18 000 employees.

The mining and quarrying industry reported an annual decrease of 33 000 employees in December 2009.

With most Soccer World Cup stadiums and construction projects completed the construction industry reported an annual decrease of 61 000 jobs by the end of last year.
