WORLD famous "Mathemagician" Arthur Benjamin will perform at the Sci-Bono Discovery Centre in Newtown, Johannesburg.

The mathematics professor, who is also a magician, will take part in the 15th anniversary of Living Maths on Saturday from noon to 1pm.

"The show provides a rare opportunity for audience members of all ages to be entertained by a performer who makes maths easy to understand," says Steve Sherman, the founder of Living Maths.

"It is no secret that many pupils are intimidated by maths and are not aware of simple tricks, which can be learned to help calculate maths problems quickly and correctly."

Benjamin, nickname the Human Calculator, will demonstrate how he can arrive at rapid mental answers ahead of a calculator. Volunteers in the audience will be invited to check his results.

"Pupils across our province struggle with mathematics and are afraid to take it as a subject. Yet the study of maths underpins everyday living and is critical for developing conceptual and logistical skills that will benefit pupils irrespective of their career choice.

"We are excited to host a world-renowned professor who will visibly demonstrate that maths can be fun and exciting," said Thandi O'Hagan, communications manager at Sci-Bono.
