AFTER the premature return home of goalkeeper Emile Baron due to a shoulder injury, Bafana Bafana coach Carlos Alberto Parreira has sent an SOS to Maritzburg United goalie Shu-Aib Walters to join the team currently on tour in Brazil to prepare for the 2010 Fifa World Cup.
Bafana Bafana media officer Matlhomola Morake said Walters was expected in Sao Paolo later this week where the South African team has arrived for the second leg of the intensive training camp.
Bafana have two goalkeepers in Brazil, Itumeleng Khune and Moeneeb Josephs. Walters, formerly with Bloemfontein Celtic, has received Bafana Bafana call-ups in the past.
The South African team, consisting mainly of Premier Soccer League players, has been in Rio de Janeiro in the past two weeks, where they played six matches against insignificant sides, winning four and drawing two.
On Saturday night, Bafana Bafana beat the second string of Botafago 1-0 with a goal by Siphiwe Tshabalala.
Most of the teams they have played have fielded bench-warmers as they are in the thick of the league programme. Botafogo are under the watchful eye of one clueless Joel Santana, the former Bafana coach.
Bafana Bafana will play three matches: against Desportivo Brasil on Thursday, Palmeiras on Saturday and wrap up the tour against Santos on April 3.
On March 31, they will travel to Asuncion for a return fixture against Paraguay, whom the South Africans hammered 3-0 in Atteridgeville in 2008 - the first time they defeated a South American team.
