One of the men accused of killing hotel manager Mark Truter confessed to tightly wrapping duct tape around his mouth and nose.
The confession by Wiseman Ndlovu, 29, was admitted into evidence by the Pietermaritzburg high court yesterday.
Justice Isaac Madondo ruled the confession and Ndlovu's pointing out of the murder scene were made freely and voluntarily.
In previous medical evidence, the court heard that Truter, who suffered from cystic fibrosis, died of suffocation.
His mother Paulette Truter testified earlier that the tape was wound so tightly around her son's face it would have suffocated a healthy person.
Ndlovu and Sphelele Ngubo, 28, are accused of murdering Truter and robbing him of R35000. Both have pleaded not guilty.
Truter was murdered in his bedroom in the Thistle Hotel, which is owned by his parents, on March 23, 2008.
Ndlovu said his brother, a barman at the hotel, gave him a disk which he and Ngubo used to unlock the hotel's security gate.
