JAZZ pianist Andile Yenana will perform live at the State Theatre in Pretoria tomorrow.
Yenana, pictured, will be performing as part of 2010 Jazz and African Music Nights Series, a project that started early this year. The pianist will share the stage with up-and-coming singer Solly Mabena.
Born in King William's Town and having grown up in a jazz environment with his father being a staunch music lover, Yenana's passion for music started at a very young age.
When he fell in love with the piano, Yenana said he knew that he wanted to play only jazz sounds.
The music fundi has established himself as one of the best music arrangers and jazz pianists. Yenana has worked closely with saxophonist Zim Ngqawana and trumpeter Feya Faku.
Yenana was part of Steve Dyer's Mahube project. In 1996, Yenana and Ngqawana visited the US as part of Black History Month, the first of three visits to Chicago he has made.
Together with Ngqawana, Yenana has toured the world extensively.
However, playing at the Royal Albert Hall in 1997 could be one of the highlights of his career.
Yenana has arranged songs for musicians such as Sibongile Khumalo, Gloria Bosman and Suthukazi Arosi, among other top names.
From the late 1990s, his other main project was the band which was called Voice. It was a collaboration with Sydney Mnisi, Marcus Wyatt, Herbie Tsoaeli and drummers Lulu Gontsana and Morabo Morajele.
Yenana was selected in 2005 as Standard Bank Young Artist for Jazz. Tickets for the show are available at Computicket.
